Akzar Strolls Home to Win 2014 Warrnambool Cup

May 1st, 2014

Talented seven-year-old Akzar has justified punters support and his resounding favouritism, storming home to win the Listed Warrnambool Cup (2350m) this afternoon by more than four lengths from Westsouthwest and Shoreham.

Jumping fairly, the Selkirk gelding was forced to settle wide, a few lengths off the pace of early leaders Picture Editor, Gottino and St Jean who set a steady pace over the back straight.

Rounding the bend close to the wide fence, Akzar displayed an incredible turn of foot to explode from the pack and find the line well and truly in the clear and record a fourth impressive victory in his current preparation.

Trainer Darren Weir, who also won a new car for winning the Warrnambool trainer’s challenge, was understandably thrilled with Akzar’s performance in the Cup, and was quick to lay the praise on his local team in the victory.

“It was fantastic” Weir said following the race.

“Everyone works hard at home and all the boys at Warrnambool who look after these horses; they do a great job and are a big part of it, so it’s a thrill for everyone.

“He looked fantastic in the yard I thought today; a lot of people might have thought he looked a bit light but he just looked fit to me.

“He ran out the trip well and the ground was obviously good for him.

“Brad rode it to perfection.”

Having completed his ninth race this preparation alone in winning the 2014 Warrnambool Cup, Weir revealed plans are yet to be made going forward for Akzar, but a trip north of the border to contest events over the 2014 Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival could figure.

“I don’t know where we go now, we might go to Brisbane with him or something like that, but we’ll just enjoy the day” Weir added.

Jockey Brad Rawiller delivered a typically strong ride on Akzar in the 2014 Warrnambool Cup and was particularly delighted in delivering a win to Weir.

“Darren keeps doing it time and time again” Rawiller said immediately after dismounting.

“I said it about May’s Dream on the weekend; he had her set for that race and that was exactly the same with Akzar.

“This horse had been prepared for the 2400 and the last two times I just think he was looking for that distance, but Darren had him where he wanted to be for the big one and we’ve got it.

“So many good plans don’t necessarily work out, but I’m just so wrapped for the connections and everyone involved with this horse.

“It just couldn’t have worked out better and I was just happy to be going with him because he was going so good; you can’t hold them up on that sort of ground and expect a sprint and he has a great sprint, so we flowed with him and he was just never going to get beaten.”
