2014 Warrnambool Cup Nominations Promise A Star-Studded Race

April 28th, 2014

The 2014 Warrnambool Cup nominations have been released to much anticipation. 31 nominations have been announced, with a field limit of 16 and 4 emergencies. A quick glance through the list gives a good indication that we can expect an exciting race. Zabeelionaire, who hasn’t won a race since his 2012 South Australian Derby run at Morphettville, might potentially be lining up alongside 2013 Warrnambool Cup winner Banca Mo, who along with 2013 placegetters Muirfield and Shiny Buttons appear to be keen for a re-run of last year’s race.

Trainers with nominated horses include Gai Waterhouse, who is hoping for a good run from Irish horse Glencadam Gold. Ms Waterhouse also has New Zealand horse Valediction among the nominations as an unlikely contender.

Peter Moody has Irish stayer Ancient King and Vatuvei, while Michael Moroney has a couple of nice horses in the race, including New Zealand-bred and 2013 second-placed Muirfield. We can expect Darren Weir to be looking forward to the race, with in-form Akzar and last year’s third-placed Shiny Buttons set to make a strong impact on the race.

As for the weather, any rain early in the week should start clearing on Wednesday. Thursday should be a reasonably sunny day with a bit of warmth to it. On Friday there’s likely to be some rain again, so it seems the Warrnambool Cup has had the fortune to be scheduled on the driest day of the week.

This 2014 Warrnambool Cup is shaping up to be one of the biggest yet, with greater than usual hype surrounding it. Considered one of Australia’s largest country race meets, the $200,000 purse offered at the 2014 Warrnambool Cup has pulled in some great horses and will undoubtedly attract large crowds to the track. With the final field set to be released on Tuesday (Apr 29th), this will surely be one of the most exciting country races of the year.
